Angalia's Papa Stratis is revered by Lesvos volunteers, but activists can't entirely substitute the state/EUhttp://tracks.unhcr.org/2015/07/a-good-samaritan-in-greece/ …
-
Why volunteers in Lesvos help refugees: "We have given up our personal lives because we cannot stand seeing babies like ours in the streets"
-
I've heard this said by many locals/expats in Lesvos. It's not political ideology as much as it's staying human by responding to need.
-
On top of that, limited resources/mounting arrivals, volunteers have to deal w harassment from some locals, defamation by mainstream media.
-
If there are crooks profiteering on misery, find them. They're not the volunteers I met. I won't trust To Vima & far-right rags' "reporting"
-
‘I owe it to them’ - Giorgos Tyrikos-Ergas, who wrote the Angalia post, on why he helps refugeeshttp://globalvoicesonline.org/2015/08/25/everyday-people-put-solidarity-into-action-helping-refugees-in-greece/ …

"My family, refugees to Syria during World War II, managed to survive b/c they had a 'dish to eat''. I am alive thanks to Syrian solidarity"
-
I didn't get the chance to meet Giorgos or Papa Stratis in Lesvos, but I wish I had, to shake their hand & thank them for restoring humanity
