      For starters, if there's a transponder setting that allows the tower to take control on final approach, why not make it usable by the tower?

      @asteris because in final there are security settings, if it worked everywhere anybody could crack it.

      .@muzzarca sure, but once the pilot inputs that transponder setting, in theory the plane would be equally vulnerable

          @asteris @muzzarca there can be no 100% safe system.Pilot not being homi/suicidal is a pretty good assumption for designing (Or used to be)

          @ighallas agreed, obviously. All I'm saying is that reactive measures won't improve safety, esp. arbitrary ones, like in post-9/11

          @ighallas didn't say all. Eg. banning sharp objects in cabin isn't a bad rule, let alone all the other obvious items. Principle is flawed

          @asteris the sensors have limited radius and are directional, now you know why airports and landing strips are built as they are :)

          @muzzarca in this case, tower reportedly instructed the pilot to activate the transponder setting to allow it, which means it was feasible
