2 generations ago even, Greeks revered education; having emerged from an era of conflicts & poverty, they knew only edu can uplift a country

There are very tangible reasons why free public edu is still very much viewed as solemn in Greece: history, deprivation and sacrifice.

My father would go to school in wartime Larissa, escorted by his older brother, skirting corpses to get there. Uni edu became his core value

And this is also why I find attacks on schools unbearable. Denying the next generation a way out of the mess you made, the biggest sin.
