Twitter engaging w & protecting vulnerable users from abuse/persecution is THE key political issue here, as important as freedom of speech.

Even more, arguably, as there can be no free speech when abuse looms. I've known many users, political or not, who were silenced by abuse.

What Twitter needs to do is turn some of that IPO capital to empathy, hire more listeners, stop obsessing with infotainment & celebrities.

Abuse, privacy & freedom of speech are interlinked, and have persisted forever. Online, at least since the age of IRC & bulletin boards.

And, admittedly, although the "global conscience" on here is a marvelous (though flawed) thing, it doesn't handle or confront abuse well.

Extremists & regimes of all persuasions will be the least of our problems if we allow the weakest amongst us to be ground down by ourselves.
