Asteroids w increasingly NEO trajectories are only discovered too JIT for comfort. Aversion capability still nil, preparedness still minimal
Let's assume that the next space rock discovered 5 days prior to NEO traversal presents a non-negligible chance of impact. What then?

@asteris and this is why both ESA & NASA are working on mission concepts for early detection and de-orbit http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Technology/NEO/ESA_presents_NEO_mission_studies_at_UN_COPUOS … -
.
@Capoglou but until we achieve early detection (Lagrange points?) & de-orbit, we have to work on preparedness, mitigation & response -
@asteris which was successfully funded on kickstarter this summer https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/arkydforeveryone/arkyd-a-space-telescope-for-everyone-0 … ex JPL staff are working now for@PlanetaryRsrcs -
.
@Capoglou I'd love to read an extensive, knowledgeable recap on the state of play in blog/article form; like the one you're giving now ;) -
@asteris haha will put it on my to do list ;) -
@Capoglou what, saving mankind from errant rocks? All in a day's work, I've faith in you, space lady :) -
@asteris The purpose is to inform interested astronomers (amateur & professional) and others potentially interested in contributing to NEAs. -
@Capoglou astronomers essential, but NASA always won the public over to fight its' budgetary battles, and this one is undeniably vital - 2 more replies

@asteris . JPL has developed some really cool concepts, it is all a matter of political will (and funding) http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/asteroids/initiative/index.html#.UxZ7C_m1ZcQ … -
.
@Capoglou de-orbit caps should be achievable w existing tech, but priorities lacking; also worried abt lack of progress in early warning

@asteris nada mate. It's a nasty universe and we humans like navel gazing too much. Why worry about a rock when a nuke will do just fine :p -
@arcandros right now, I worry about being locked out from Twitter for good, mate, see previous. Total security = no access :/

@asteris Let's hope that NASA will manage to secure funding fpr the Asteroid de-orbit initiative. http://www.nasa.gov/press/2013/november/nasa-continues-workshop-to-discuss-asteroid-initiative-ideas/ … -
.
@Capoglou if it doesn't, it'll be a hell of a bitter irony (also, given the amount of junk we've accrued up there)

@asteris We cannot ignore this risk. Even the UN have a working group on NEOs Working Group on Near-Earth Object http://www.oosa.unvienna.org/oosa/en/COPUOS/stsc/wgneo/index.html …Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
