I never particularly liked the fact that Yahoo acquired Flickr, but to be fair, it didn't try to yahoo-ize anything but the login process
@exiledsurfer fair enough, and I grappled with the thought myself. But overall, in my experience, it's the least invasive cloud service now

@asteris i worked on flickr's foto annotation (overlay) code, was with them from the beginning; didn't want a yahoo id. But, also agree w/ u -
@exiledsurfer impressive; I've blamed Yahoo for aggresively priming the era of invasive cloud services, but now we're up against much worse -
@asteris Never saw my group blog from last decade, http://umediated.org - 'tracking tools that decentralize media' ? was teh 'goto' RSS feed -
@exiledsurfer missed a lot of those until I arrived on the meta-media path. Tried http://metajournalism.wordpress.com but not many were interested -
@asteris basically i find that the only way to secure one's SM content is to back it up to one's own domain w/ tools & tricks. -
@exiledsurfer I tried doing that on my blog for a while, but it was too messy. I believe in db-based backups for such things -
@asteris well, of course one keeps a dB on a hard drive somewhere as well - but that doesnt make it avail to a site visitor. -
@exiledsurfer ah, wish I had time to tangle with spidering & archiving magic. I trust cloudies less & less each year, let alone some folding - 2 more replies

@asteris actually, this acquisition attrition frustration is why i only joined twitter 2 years ago, although i had an alpha invite. -
@exiledsurfer I see where you're coming from. Walked a similar path from a user PoV, feel the same. Thus the accountability fervor :) -
@asteris oh, it's clear that you and i share much similar experience and viewpoints on all of this stuff. I'm a brutal user pov betatester -
@exiledsurfer the IT crowd still needs brutal, gonzo, honest product testing. Too much circlejerking in the Valley :p -
@asteris hah, tell me about it. but people like me get shut out. The best IT title i ever had at a startup was "chainsaw" - on my bizcard. -
@exiledsurfer they shut out Winer too, but people listen to him because he makes sense, he codes epic stuff, and he cuts thru the BS -
@asteris totally. i totally listen to dave. but i love taking pot shots at him as well. Feel sorry for him for all the times he's been right -
@exiledsurfer hah, he rocks, but we should be taking occasional potshots at him, to keep him from becoming too big for his breeches :p - 1 more reply

@asteris i was with so many sm services from alpha / beta stage, watched them grow , get acquired, screw users that built their service. -
@exiledsurfer amen! I hated Yahoo's commoditization drive from the moment they acquired egroups. I flailed against Y! ID for a long time
