Ok, so I haven't played Skyrim in YEARS now - what mods do you recommend? And are you playing the special edition, or the regular one? Just curious :)

This can be a long thread, but I'll try to summarize: didn't try SSE, b/c my Legendary setup was complicated, plus lack of SKSE64. Using Rudy ENB for lightweight/visible gfx, the ELFX/CoT/True Storms combo, ofc USLEEP, SkyUI & iHUD/SkyHUD; SMIM/Clutter fixes & the HiRes patch.
-
Also, I'm testing out combos of realistic combat mods, but it's a work in progress (rn Ultimate Combat/Wildcat, Weapon/Armor fixes, Realistic AI Detection, True Armor, Mortal Enemies, TK Dodge). Using NMM & LOOT, no major issues except some CTDs due to memory overflow.
-
Lastly, I'm aiming for max realism in NPC interactions (Realistic Dialogue Overhaul, Serana Dialogue Edit, Improved Adoptions etc, also a WIP but no issues so far.) And QoL mods are a must (Improved Magelight/Candelight, Enhanced Camera, Acquisitive Soul Gems, Quality World Map)

Not sure if I want to play Skyrim. The guide to one of the games has the thickness of an encyclopedia book.

Ah, it's an acquired taste, but worth the effort. It's really not the kind of RPG you have to worry about dotting your i's, lends itself to freeform exploration/questing, plus the endless improvements possible through the thousands of mods. My only major gripe is the civil war.
-
So even more complicated than Assassin's Creed.
-
Heh, just different design philosophies. Assassin's Creed and The Witcher are self-contained experiences with fixed protagonists, Skyrim -and all Bethesda open world games- are creativity sandboxes. Modding is an intended part of the experience, warts and all. But it's worth it.
