Actually, Red Sparrow's core spook tale is functionally brilliant, despite the lazy/cliched setup, quite in counterpoint to Atomic Blonde's OTT contrivances. In fact, they're counterpoints to each other in (dis)empowerment, even if they're both in the end misogynist at heart.

There's gotta be better spy tales hiding in Hollywood producers' filing cabinets than both of these flicks, esp. in this day & age of renewed Cold Wars and real life OTT diplomatic contrivances. (Though I did somewhat enjoy Atomic Blonde's source material, gutted in the movie.)

At any rate, if I'm to pick a fave OTT spy heroine of the current crop, I'll go with Ed Brubaker's Velvet. She's badass, mysterious & deadly stylish, deserves screen treatment, but Hollywood had better honor her w Game of Thrones-caliber adaptation chopshttps://twitter.com/andreziffy/status/665422243959332865 …

And it'll be really refreshing to one day see stories of female spies written/directed by women, for a change.
