Going back to #RUSCRO, and I understand hindsight is 20/20 but, do you think #Cherchesov made the right decision in substituting both #Cheryshev and #Dzyuba prior to extra time? #Poll #RUS #CRO #WorldCup #Rusia2018 cc: @asteris @Zeinobia @K_ar_im @KarlreMarks @Amen_Zine

Hell, нет! :p And please point me to any cogent analysis explaining what he was thinking (and what Dalic was thinking when he left an injured Subašić in for extra time)

The only thing I can think of was that Cherchesov was depending on Russia's defense and relying on the match to go to PK. This is the first World Cup to allow one substitution in extra time. That's when he brought out the cavalry; #Dzagoev and relied too heavily on #Akinfeev.

Makes sense, but presumes that he banked on the deficit btn a wounded Subasic (who'd earlier saved *3* pens in a single shootout) and a very good, but on a mediocre day, Akinfeev. It'd make sense to assume Subasic would be subbed out. And Russia's defense was barely managing.

I think Dalic knew exactly what he was doing, @asteris. #Croatia was still the stronger and more experienced team even with #Russia's "home team" advantage. And #Subašić is one of the best GKs out there. Sad to see Russia go but they did well considering only 37% possession.

Sure, Dalic had the upper hand (and his team on the field), and Subasic didn't really cost him the shootout in the end, but it was a risky gamble. But that's also what makes football engrossing, the tactics level (which I can barely suss out, but nevertheless enjoy).
