Man that’s more background than I know about it.

This trivia from Prime Video app fits pretty well with the idea of it being the proposed “Space Force”....”It’s a very right-wing book.”

The movie is definitely a critique of the book, or at least calls it out on its bullshit, the book itself is ... complicated and definitely is a product of Heinlein's idiosyncratic libertarianism.
-
Yeah, pretty obvious if you’ve read the book. Verhoeven’s stance is more evident in Robocop & Total Recall, he’s very much aware & critical of corporatism and totalitarianism, but also able to blend these themes with blockbuster action.

The dude grew up in occupied Denmark watching Nazi movies as a formulating experience. He’s not a Nazi, and he hates fascism. But the subjects clearly fascinate him.

Agreed. He's definitely fascinated by fascism in all its forms. Take Robocop, this is a world in which the fascists have already won before the cameras even start rolling but he finds a way to showcase at least people's best intentions.

The book lauds it. The movie is mocking the book

I listened to the damn directors commentary. Apparently the Allies once tried to bomb a German munitions plant in his town, missed, and killed a bunch of his buddies, when he was in second grade. That would mess anyone up.

I remember being totally surprised that people didn’t understand it as satire. I laughed all the way through it.
