Modern DSLR’s, which are used by the vast majority of news shooters, still have noisy macanical shutters. This will eventually go away as mirrorless cameras, like Sony’s A7 line (has a silence mode that actually is quiet), are used more widely.https://twitter.com/radiosmith/status/1006355323429511169 …

Nikon’s noiseless mode wasn’t too bad either (at least on the D7000). I love the DSLR culture, but practicalities make mirrorless cams so much more enticing.

I’m not really using the D7000 anymore, since I got a G7, but its noiseless mode helped me in plenty of conference/festival settings (good enough for pin drop speech portraits). Maybe Nikon’s tech has regressed since then.

Maybe, I just know I was always disappointed by the silent mode on them. Never really made a difference in quiet situations. The new Sony ones though, damn. Can't even tell someone's taking a photo.

The big question is, can pro photogs afford to wean themselves from DSLRs towards mirrorless cameras? Far as I know, adoption is still niche for most field photojournalists.
