While politicians endlessly squabble over Obamacare, we ignore the real issue: the price of providing health care in the USA is way too high
One core reason for this: the AMA has a gov't provided monopoly over health care & they use it to artificially limit the supply of doctors.
-
-
The AMA is run by MDs and is both the sole licensing board & doctors union. They're incentivized to keep salaries high by limiting supply.
-
They limit med school admissions & refuse to modernize MD education, which is kept artificially long, expensive, and difficult.
-
There's no reason a radiologist needs to go through 8 years of school followed by 5 years of residency. Unnecessary costs and burden.
-
Gov't should allow for competing licensing boards with the explicit goal of bringing competition to supplying certified doctors.
-
Let's stop squabbling over tiny changes to health insurance regulation and fix the root cause of our problems.
