I remember when I first read about Caltrain electrification it was slated to be completed in 2017, which seemed impossibly far in the future. Now it’s pushed back to 2022. Does anyone seriously believe it will actually happen?

The overhead power system is already installed along substantial portions of the line… rebuilding of the SF tunnels to make room for the installation will wrap up this spring.

That said, they had schedule slips early on, installing the first batch of support poles for overhead electrification. They’re trying to make up for it with some success. It’s entirely worth asking why it’s so damn hard to do this sort of thing.

I just noticed the date of 2017 you mentioned… that’s more like when they managed to start construction after *finally* getting fully funded. MTC, the body that controls Bay Area transportation funding, has long given BART and freeways higher priority.
