THREAD The appalling treatment of is neither an isolated one, nor should this case have sent 'shockwaves' to all UK universities especially now as the UK escalates its already xeno-racist immigration policy on migrants. 1/1

I wrote to about my hostile experience. By and large I fit within the criteria. But this article reflects my experience completely. There needs to be synchronicity between policy and practice.

The saddest thing about this whole saga has been learning how many people have gone through exactly what I'm going through. And yet there is frustrating deliberate silence from all those who should respond, inc,

'Senior academics warn that unless the government reins in its aggressive application of immigration rules, talented international researchers will not want to come to the UK.' I'd argue that ship has already sailed...

Asiya Islam’s case should be of national significance to the position she is in now means she can no longer apply for permanent right to remain. Britain certainly is not ‘open to global talent!’ This will impact on lots of our members.

Prof Engström (Sweden) had been considering a move to the UK in the future, but the harsh immigration environment had “completely put me off”. He adds: “The silent acceptance of xenophobia and the hostile environment policies would have to go first.”

The exclusion of Global South voices and presence in the academy occurs way before we even get to jobs. Having endured it for the past 6 years, I can say that not only is it institutions who are happy to do the HO's dirty work, but it is scholars themselves who benefit so 🤐

Today the government continues to shows us that it lacks basic understanding of its own system’s inadequacies and it refuses to listen and learn from the people who suffer them. ‘Even more open’.... A universities minister who knows nothing about universities. Love to see it.
