Indonesia could cut poverty rates by 31% if 1.7% of GDP were invested in universal social protection schemes, instead of prioritizing debt service. Debt service obligations deepen inequality by taking away funds for healthcare, livelihood support.

Indonesia could cut poverty rates by 31% if 1.7% of GDP were invested in universal social protection schemes, according to Oxfam*. But it prioritizes debt service which accounts for close to 40% of GDP.** Higher debt service obligations will deepen inequality by taking away funds that could support healthcare services and livelihoods.

Since the mid-1980s, deregulation and liberalization policies have led to one of the most extreme increases in income and wealth inequality observed in the world. While the top 1% has largely benefited from economic reforms, growth among low and middle income groups has been relatively slow and poverty persists.
