Over 3,000 representatives of the Afghan people convened in Kabul for a 5-day Consultative Loya Jirga on Peace, which ended today. The Jirga concluded with a 23-point resolution, stressing an immediate ceasefire by the start of Ramadan.
We stand ready to announce and implement a ceasefire in order to help reduce violence. We welcome the Jirga’s overwhelming support for upholding the current Constitution and sustaining of the Islamic Republic system.
We honor the Jirga’s endorsement of the government to lead the peace process and call on the Taliban to open political office in Kabul and engage with the Afghan government in good faith. As a sign of goodwill gesture, I ordered the release of 175 Taliban prisoners.
