      electrical wiring in a house, interference from other electrical devices in the house/neighborhood etc.

      there's things you can buy to test for that/minimise interference, but obviously that's an additional expense.

      had a similar issue when I was in Ireland, and just got a really long ethernet cable from Maplin and my landlord ran it along...
