Yeah I've heard good things. Is it possible to get into solo (i.e. finding randoms etc.) or is it one of those significantly better with friends type of deals?

It is possible to play solo but it's much more difficult and usually is only easy with experience. It's definitely a game that is significantly better with friends but it's a game where making friends is pretty easy and it has a very adult playerbase, kinda like WoW.
