On a 1 - WotlK scale, should I start playing this?
Depends how much story you like in your MMORPG. If you just want to race to max level, then probably not. The early levels are v. "Baby's First MMO" a slow burner until lv40ish. If you're down for watching a lot of cutscenes etc. like in a single player RPG, check it out.

Does some things much better than WoW: story, way less RNG in gearing, lot's of optional content etc. WoW has the edge when it comes to endgame content, and QoL systems like transmog, challenges/achieves, AH etc. TBH it's been fun watching both games learn from each other.
