Is that game still online only/depending on playing with others? The setting/premise really interests me but the idea of having to play with strangers, unable to pause and other MP issues put me off.
I really want to pickup #TheDivision2 but I also really don't want to fall down another rabbit hole again 
such first world problems!

Yep, it's very much online only. The playing with others isn't so bad where the PvP is limited to specific areas, and the group content is small-group. It's a lot of fun with friends, and any interaction with strangers outside of group content is fairly minimal.
