Depends on content, existing community, strategy, cross-promotion effort. So many things beyond just post and expect reach.
Social media strategists are paid for a reason 
Didnt say it was never worth it, but I think for many people the time spent trying to figure out their algorithms is just not worth it (if you're doing organic reach).
I guess my point is that if you can’t take the time to figure it out, work with people who can/do as their specialty. I see too many people ad hoc their social media/community building strategy, and then cry foul against platforms/algorithms when they don’t see success.
