Thinking that just increasing empty destruction increases the stakes or ups the ante just doesn't work. It's hollow and meaningless. It's like saying "you know what would make this briefcase with a million dollars in it feel more important to the audience? A billion dollars!"

Just adding "more" for the sake of increasing scale does absolutely nothing to create an emotional engagement with your audience. What does do that is making it about the journeys (arcs) of your characters.

And this is not to say that graphic violence, or cursing, or go to "edgy elements" are inherently "bad." There's films that have all those elements that I love. But they're never going to be the magic flavoring that makes bland soup come alive.

We've needed more family-friendly horror. I've been sayin' it for years.
-
I want two things from horror. One of them is to be family friendly more and the second is victims that aren’t being morally punished. Sometimes bad stuff just happens to good people

I think the problem is people don’t understand how to make something dark, like they want swearing and murder, and there’s a weird amount of people who think that makes something dark
-
I agree. I see "dark" more as a crutch than a descriptor in regards to superhero films and shows.

It's a slightly more subtle version of what was implied in the first season of Jessica Jones
-
Kilgrave was scary before we even met him because of the physiological torture and trauma we witnessed in his victims. It was so jarring without being gratuitous and that helped make JJ S1 so good. WandaVision has yet to reveal the real villain which I think adds another layer
