Probably because films are not always composed as static frames. Sometimes they are, but more often than not they exist as motion over time. Where your eye looks has more to do with the previous shot than anything. This is a fundamental tool of editing called eye trace.https://twitter.com/benedict_rs/status/1231045311377920000 …

Now let's look at the image KEVIN SMITH HELD UP AS DIVINE ART. The hammer, which should be the focus, is lost in the muddy, distracting background. My eye is drawn instead to... some shiny clouds far off in the distance. Great job. What story does this composition tell? Nothing. pic.twitter.com/todzUdD4O4

I’m not going to pretend that the Russo Marvel films are glorious examples of fine art cinematography and composition — in fact it’s mostly been their weakest aspect —but critiquing this shot without connecting it from the previous shot renders it meaningless.

It’s telling that the rest of her thread revolves into mocking people for caring about a magic hammer. Then you also need to mock audiences for caring about a down and out Boxer, a French girl looking for love or a boy who sees dead people. Just admit you hate story.

I get being irritated by fandoms — that’s usually my default position — and if you didn’t like the movie, that’s fine. But it’s really silly to take one of the largest reveals of any story and smugly pretend to be superior to the audience for being invested in it.

Some directors put a lot more work into composition than others and that’s not necessarily good or bad — it’s a choice between style and rhythm. Wes Anderson is all composition and it’a why he’ll never do any action movie.

Compare that with Paul Greengrass’s direction on the Bourne movies. His style completely sacrifices intention composition to impart a feeling of chaos, immediacy and motion.

She's making a terrible bad faith argument. Not only is the shot driven by movement and context, but there's even flames on the left, right next to where he catches the hammer, that are way more eye-catching than the blurry sky on the right, IF you want an argument about that... pic.twitter.com/8Hh84m7Oo6

Some directors fixate more on scene continuity than frame composition as well. In VFX we try to compose to the shot but if it jumps in the edit we need to compromise a shot because something else was key. This shot COULD be better regardless - but the plate lighting is not great.
