A whole helluva lot, that’s what, and none of it good. We need to trust our readers. And we need to stop being so goddamn afraid that our kids will be exposed to difficult situations. THEY WILL BE. They already are, most likely.

This is life. There’s not escaping it. And books, art, should help is through those difficulties. Not provide a way around them. Books provide light and celebration IN the mess. They don’t avoid the mess altogether.

And can we, for the love of god, move past this horrid idea that queerness requires some sort of screener to make sure readers are ready for it. That’s some toxic, damaging bullshit.

Queerness is not an event that happens to someone. It’s a life, an identity, a community. It’s people. It’s who we ARE, not something we do or said or that someone else did or said to us. Screening not necessary, sopic.twitter.com/re5ih75Ggu
