BREAKING: @Facebook moves to combine its multiple Messaging platforms. While positioned as a privacy-friendly play, it's timing suggests a competition play to head off any potential regulatory efforts to limit data sharing across services https://www.facebook.com/notes/mark-zuckerberg/a-privacy-focused-vision-for-social-networking/10156700570096634/ …

I strongly support consumer privacy when communicating online but this move is entirely a strategic play to use privacy as a competitive advantage & further lock-in Facebook as the dominant messaging platform.

While communications *between* users will be E2E encrypted, messages to @Facebook services will still be collected/retained by @Facebook in order to provide you the services (for example, when you chat with 'service bots' https://botanalytics.co/blog/2018/03/29/best-facebook-messenger-bots/ …

I *highly* recommend watching this video about the success of @WeChat in China to understand what @Facebook's move is here: https://nyti.ms/2jZdURP  via @nytvideo

One critical question is: Will @Facebook Messenger/@WhatsApp / etc be interoperable with Signal messenger & @Google Allo? These all use the same underlying protocol (Axolotl Ratchet) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_Protocol …

This is no competition play. It’s merely a move to hide the fact that core Facebook is in existential decline and they don’t want it standing alone to reveal that.

“My focus for the last couple of years has been understanding and addressing the biggest challenges facing Facebook.” Should’ve been understanding, humbly correcting and preventing a huge data breech and the biggest abuse of personal data for unethical, manipulative ends, Mr Z.

This is true or Facebook would integrate with Snapchat or make your whole Facebook profile portable to a competing social network.
