More on the free energy principle and active inference, with a schematic way of interpreting internalist vs anti-representational stances on one axis and the importance of life to construct a theory for cognition on the other

VERY important paper from Logothetis' group just posted on about decoding consciousness in PFC in monkeys during a no-report paradigm. VERY critical data for current debates in awareness.

A technical critique of the free energy principle as presented in “Life as we know it" Biehl Pollock Kanai, 2020. “Life as we know it" refers to this paper Friston, K. (2013). Life as we know it. Journal of The Royal Society Interface, 10(86).

This interview with , chief maker-happener of The Paris Agreement, is the single most rigorously reasoned, solution-oriented, and largehearted piece of ecological-economic optimism I've encountered in years:

It led me to re-read this nice explanation of why we can get this to happen and the biology of body patterns (Hox)

This is hilarious. A Norwegian TV programme pitted some professional stock-pickers against an astrologist, some beauty bloggers and - i kid you not - cows shitting in a field. (short thread).

Does the EEG truly reflect consciousness? Dinesh Pal, Duan Li, and Ph.D. students from UM Anesthesiology's Center for Consciousness Science dissociate levels of consciousness and EEG measures in a provocative Journal of Neuroscience article (in press):

Great question! I thought about this quite a bit last night, and came up with two immediate answers:

It's because no one grasps biology. Physical sciences involve well-developed conceptual frameworks because the concepts are simple enough to be tractable. We don't know how to talk about biology. We can't make a realistic simulation of a bacterium.

I've just released a fairly lengthy paper on defining & measuring intelligence, as well as a new AI evaluation dataset, the "Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus". I've been working on this for the past 2 years, on & off. Paper: ARC:

Here's some interview questions I have asked postdoc candidates in the past. I also ask some technical questions specific to the planned project. Might be useful for anyone on the postdoc job hunt...

Consider: millions of years ago our antecedents gave a massive sacrifice of their left hemisphere. We lost a tremendous amount of short term memory and replaced it with Broca’s, Wernicke & the phonological loop. But why? So we can—talk. Thus chimpanzees can do this—we can’t:

If you’re teaching an undergraduate neuroscience curriculum - or even and a graduate or high school EEG course, this web platform from the Mathewson clan is possibly one of the very best learning resources ever created for that purpose. And it’s free. We live in amazing times.
