One day on an Economy ticket bought with miles, I was upgraded on an Emirates flight to First Class. A fluke. I met a party of very eccentric rich people going to Uganda from Dubai. In that short flight, I learned that "normal" will not make you rich. These guys were abnormal.

That was the day I started living life. The interesting thing was that I got to Entebbe and met two Nigerian friends in Private Equity at the airport. They were laughing and not talking. Years later, I discovered they were selling sugar there to make a killing. Sugar!!

I asked them later "why Uganda?" The answer - Young population, 70% under 30 and they had the sugar connect. Same reason why some people will ask "Why Nigeria? To some people investing now. Same young population....they need sweet things. Find the "connect" for the next sugar.

A caveat about this thread: I've also wondered if the rich become eccentric because of wealth or eccentricity leads to wealth? There are also several eccentric poor people. Extremes work in both ways. Van Gogh didn't make money from his insanity, others did. Rich bet on madness.

Na true. In my days in Uniben, the big-time profs don't care giving the whole class As. It is the masters degree holders that are sadists. Always wanting to give Es. Theory of compensation in action?

Wow... This is a powerful story describing the difference between top and middle management. Always struggled with the concept.
