The real power of OpenJDK is thousands of person-years thrown at QA/QE. Some of those years are mine. Some testing-related subprojects are projects in their own right and scale. The amount of effort exerted to "just" maintain the testbases dwarfs my expectations all the time.

An *excellent* talk on automated testing of filesystem crash consistency. If you are into fuzzing/testing but don't know anything about filesystems: this talk explains the problem in depth, shows why it's *very* hard, and presents an automated system that finds real bugs!

New Jepsen analysis! We talk about etcd's kv operations, watches, and locks. KV ops look strict serializable, and watches deliver all changes in order (with a minor undocumented edge case around revision zero). As usual, distributed locks aren't real:

It was one of the best conference lineups I’ve seen! Would’ve included all the [English] talks, but wanted to maintain a balance. I ended up with about 50 talks which I whittled down to 30, and 8/50 were talks from Hydraconf!

I had the pleasure of re-reading "End-to-end arguments in system design" this morning (). Making decisions about which functionality goes in which layer (or component) is as relevant a problem as ever, and end-to-end arguments are a super useful tool.

Sonos states on their website that "sustainability is non-negotiable," and that they design products to minimize impact, but I work at an e-waste recycler and have demonstrable proof this is false. Sonos's "recycle mode" intentionally bricks good devices so they can't be reused.

The three rules of daily standup: 1) It's a tool for micromanagement that crushes morale and productivity; software engineering work just doesn't break down into day-sized chunks 2) Every manager thinks their standup isn't like the standup described in (1) 3) They're wrong
