    Software updates can be annoying. But updates for internet connected software are critically important. They not only keep you safe, they keep you from inadvertently damaging the rest of the internet. Think of them like vaccines, good for you, good for the rest of the population.

    To hide the content on your Firefox start page, simply click the gear icon up in the top right corner of the page. That'll take you to the preferences for your start page where you can uncheck the boxes for things you don't want to see.

    If you hide all of the content on the Firefox start page except for the search box, you'll get a nice Firefox logo -- just like the old days. I use Nightly builds of Firefox and this is what I see:

    Looking for easy site searching in Firefox like Chrome has? Visit site for example, YouTube. Right click on site's search box and select "Add a keyword for this search." Choose your keyword, f.e, "yt". Now you can type "yt my search" in the Firefox address bar to search YouTube.

    I've seen some confusion on this recently so here's the true story. The Firefox logo is *not* a red panda. The red panda is a Firefox *mascot* but the logo is a mythical creature we invented, a giant flame-tailed fox encircling the globe.

    20 years ago AOL acquired Netscape. was right "[AOL] simply cannot undo what has been done. The Mozilla code is out there, and it cannot be recalled." AOL did eventually decide to kill Netscape and use MSIE but the code was out there and it remains free and open 20 years on.

    Twenty years ago this month the Mozilla project threw away most of the old Netscape code and started fresh with a new rendering engine that would eventually be called Gecko and a brand new cross-platform front end written in XUL.
