Hmmm... I'm happy he made progress on the project, but the patent feels... wrong. Thoughts?

I have found that when I'm in a thought loop and can't get out of it, looking at a body of water, a lake or nearby river, will quickly get me unstuck. That or watching ducks walk. That's just hilarious.

Software that feels magical grows out of a certain kind of idea. An idea that came from deep reflection on a very painful problem.

Such a simple example of UX heaven. Every login flow should include this.

To make your company sellable, remove yourself from its operations. It's incredibly hard on your ego to train other people if you built the company and did everything yourself. But watching it jug along without you is a source of even greater pride and joy.

Book-length is odd. When it comes to eBooks, I don't mind short books. When it comes to physical books, I want them to have a certain minimum amount of pages, around 200. I know it doesn't matter, yet I feel that shorter books are less profound. Why is that?

My research into problem validation surfaced this interesting fact. The "people want faster horses" quote can't be reliably attributed to Henry Ford.

A bootstrapped business starts with almost no money and slowly gathers steam. A self-funded business involves a significant investment of personal founder capital - and usually hits the ground running.

A great take on why the "cheaper than a cup of coffee" argument is not as strong as one might think. It's also dangerous for SaaS businesses, as the value of a hot beverage is completely unrelated to a problem-solving product.

When occupation turns into preoccupation, you’re in too deep. Hire, automate, and delegate to get back into balance.

Own your problems. Communicate problems and outages clearly to your customers. Immediately. They will spread the word that you're working on it, and they will be your best supporters.

You don't need to be an expert at all the roles of a bootstrapped founder. A basic understanding will do. Focus on what you do best and eventually hire experts to do the things you are not the best at. Also, you will learn on the job. Just start.

Sky from talks about my marketing efforts with my guide Zero to Sold and how to use engineering as marketing for bootstrapped startups. A very insightful read with good and actionable advice. Thanks for looking into this!

Yeah, that one. I wish I could make 's 2013 talk mandatory viewing for bootstrappers: This talk is directly responsible for a six-digit difference in my net worth; seven if I'd taken it to heart earlier. Market first! Plan! Please!
