Artists should be more than a little concerned about what this can do now and what it will be able to do in the future. Its super cool but potentially very threatening to many jobs.

Imagine if a studio could just plug your art into the AI instead of hiring you. It could spit out something not as good as yours, but close enough, faster, and free. If you are well enough known, the AI could create wholly new originals in your style.

Instead of an art director with a team of concept artists or illustrators, it could become one art director that just does minor touch ups on AI generated "close enough" images. This wont replace artists wholly by any means, but there are a lot of jobs it could replace.

To be clear I think AI research is super cool and this project is amazing in what it can do. I just hope the people making the tech are talking a lot with the people it may impact for better or worse.

Oh artists arent going anywhere but it does have some potentially very large ramifications. The invention of cars didnt destroy the horse industry but it did permanently change it.

I honestly see this opening up more opportunities as an artistic tool that can be used as a base to create even better art or quicken some of the process.

That also presents its own problem. Say if a gig needs 10 illustrations where currently that could be a month or more of work, now they will pay you for one week because they know it can be done this fast. I think there is a lot of use for this too, but not without other problems

Automation like this is just going to be another good tool in an artist's toolbox, just like content aware fills in Photoshop or automatic retopology for 3D models. This isn't going to be able to create things the same way an artist will, especially if they have a specific style

The question though is how much "able to create things the same way an artist will" really will matter to budget conscious execs. Close enough is generally a much more enticing option when presented with both much faster and much cheaper.

Something to think about though. AI is very good at recreating things in its current dataset. If you were to plug your own art in there, it would probably have trouble recreating things like dragons and dinosaurs.

That may be the case for now. I am more concerned about when it is fed more contemporary fantasy art and video game stuff. I could easily see "alligator themed monster hunter monster with 4 wings" becoming a doable prompt for it.
