Big thanks to for giving us this award! It's exciting to learn that the community appreciated our dark patterns research .

In a recent study () we found that 9/10 YouTubers do not disclose that they earn money for the products they link to in their videos. Every other consumer protection body has disclosure rules, but without any enforcement, this problem will only get worse.

This problem is hardly unique to VPN review websites: mattress review websites are some of the worst offenders, so are credit card review websites, and we all know every other Instagram user is shilling products for money.

Deception is inevitable when recommendations and reviews follow profit. Consumers never expect or seek out advertising disclosures, and influencers & content creators have no reason to disclose that they are being paid.

To determine this we read the TV's audio. If the audio output contained a stable signal then the crawler succeeded! While we only examined audio, there's a trove of other output that can guide more complex interactions (e.g. screenshots can be used to complete form registration).

By manually interacting with many channels and recording the keys that led to playback, we found that just three key sequences: [OK, OK, OK], [Down, OK, OK], and [OK, OK, Down, OK, Down, OK] could play a video on most channels. But how did we know for sure if video played?

Here's how we overcame these challenges: Roku and Fire TV expose their remote controls via web APIs. Simply issuing a GET request to http://ROKU_IP:8060/keydown/left simulates the left key⬅️. This let us spoof the remote, but how did we know what keys to issue in the first place?

There's no off-the-shelf Selenium-like f/w here that can issue commands and read state. IoT devices also operate in physical spaces where device interaction is driven by newer forms of user I/O (e.g. voice & audio). This presents a tremendous opportunity for creative engineering!

.'s thread summarizes the findings from our upcoming paper on TV tracking but let me tell you more about our crawler. Unlike the web, studying the behavior of IoT devices at scale and in an automated fashion isn’t straightforward.

Reverse engineering these sleazy dark patterns is always fun. Here's attempting to pull off the same trickery: the "last sold" times are randomized, and the "Limited-Time Offer" is always claimed to have been sold most recently (secs v/s mins).

Dark patterns are everywhere. In a year-long study we just released, we found dark patterns on over 1,200 sites, with about 200 sites being straight up deceptive. Paper and data: NYT article by based on our study:

While it may seem like this kind of marketing is recent and a consequence of the web, it's actually ~100 years old. The first known example is from 1926: The "Book of the Month Club" .

Negative option marketing is inherently predatory in nature, and companies further have all the incentives to misrepresent these schemes to users. Here's a report from the in 2009 discussing possible mitigations.

Default selection has become an increasingly common way to sneak products into basket. Here's another default on the Huel website: the subscription purchase is preselected, not the one-time purchase.
