In my opinion visible items increase likelihood, but overall it’s random. I once saw someone on Polk smashing windows of every single car parked on the street, one by one, only looking inside AFTER smashing the window. If full they’d take things, if empty they’d move to the next
But that individual appeared homeless, so not sure it’s relevant here. For the organized smash & grabs, I think visible valuables in tourist locations.
