    Think of an authoritative server as a librarian that points you toward a book. You have to ask a lot of people before you finally find the right librarian. However, the book is not with the librarian and the librarian simply points you to the location that the book is stored at.

    I was teaching DNS today in class and wanted to drill down the point that the when you get the IP address for the authoritative name server for it is not the same as the IP address for (i.e., the Web server). I did not do a good job

    Not just middle schoolers, my daughter is in 4th grade and doesnt have a phone. She and her group of friends fix a time in the evening and use Google docs to group chat. Each person uses a different color so they can identify who is whom.

    TIL: middle schoolers use Docs as a chat app & Sheets as a form of Slack (each slide is a new topic/channel) since other products are blocked at class. Ingenious! h/t Any other product hacks the kiddos are doing?

    Systematic analysis on the effect of rebuttal at CHI, kudos! Systems conferences mostly do not do rebuttal because it does not seem to help (I am sure there will be outliers, but in general that seems to be the trend). Do we need the additional burden of rebuttal?

    Post about impact of rebuttals on ends w/ reflection on whether writing 1.7 million words with little impact is worth the effort. My answer: No. We should have a full revision cycle. Just make the edits instead of wasting time explaining them.

    I am so awkward in front of the camera. Exhibit A. I once hooded a student (not my own, but her advisor was out of town and she asked me to) and I put the hood on backward even though I kept telling myself I should not be a klutz in front of the camera. ugg!

    At last Friday's Holiday Luncheon, Chair Samir Das handed out several faculty and staff awards in a number of categories. Winners included Professors , Kevin McDonnell and , and staff member Andrew Solar-Greco. Congrats to all & Happy Holidays.

    To celebrate, we had a chinese-themed Christmas party at my place. We were sous-chefs and the chinese students in the lab took center-stage. We made over 100 dumplings, all gone in under 15 minutes and "coke" chicken

    Jian's skill was in deftly combining systems and HCI. He also made amazing videos explaining his work (see more at ). He was instrumental in getting me into the accessibility space which I am very excited about.

    My first student, Jian Xu (), defended his thesis last week. Jian showed that I/O virtualization makes it extremely easy for developers to write wearable apps. He then showed how this systems technique can be used for blind users and for screenless typing to save power.
