"Delay, Deny and Deflect: How Facebook’s Leaders Fought Through Crisis", the latest NYT piece on Facebook's response to the rolling public sphere crisis of the last two years, shows a company for whom #transparency is nothing more than a subterfuge https://nyti.ms/2DlsGPi

I have been looking at online service providers' #transparency practices for a while now, and this investigative reporting, as well as FB's response, clearly show a complete lack of commitment to anything beyond the company's expansion and capture of data flows.

It's not just the fact that they tried to *manipulate* public opinion by paying to smear any pushback as both financed by alt-right favourite nemesis Soros and anti-Semitic. That is bad enough. BUT it also shows that they are totally disengaged from improving their response.

So, no matter how many similarly worded apologies Zuckerberg, Sandberg and the lot of them put forward, FB's #transparency efforts are doomed to continue to be minimalistic and reactive, carefully calibrated to address any public outrage but without engaging users' concerns.

The history of FB's transparency reporting is a chronological account of their reactions to scandal, and then doing next to nothing to empower users or taking responsibility for their role.

I do not believe this is an ethical crisis. It is a long term pattern emerging from design decisions, massive unchecked growth, hubris, and aggressive content and traffic capture. Just ask media companies about FB's promises about content and the famous "pivot to video"

Even the titles of FB's corporate blog posts show that they are not trying to pretend to do anything new. Again, an old pattern. Here are two posts, several months apart, with the *exact* same title...pic.twitter.com/uk6sKWUsJU

Much in the same vein, FB did not call their transparency reporting page "FB transparency report" like Google has been doing since 2009. Until last year, it was titled "Government requests". The original URL now redirects to current transparency page.

The addition of risk-analysis models and algorithmic content controls is supposed to steer the platform back to sanity. However, modeling and manipulating user engagement with content was precisely what brought us to this mess in the first place https://twitter.com/kevinroose/status/1063150541444997121?s=19 …
