Had a really enjoyable conversation at speaking on a new topic: creativity and AI (new stuff from 29m). Fascinating ideas and dialogue always happens when the arts and sciences come together. Important for society to understand tech advances through both lenses!

An organ that generates internal sensations during its higher functions such as perception & memory can only be solved in terms of basic operational mechanism that generates internal sensations. We need a new science for it.

As neurons evolved, synaptically-connected neuronal orders formed. An accidental coincidence happened that allowed them to associatively learn & generate internal sensations of memory. Should be a simple mechanism capable of evading us. We have no excuses; but to find it.

Building a machine that can beat humans at chess or GO is one thing. Making a robot that can walk into a kitchen and make a sandwich is another. The former is just the application of brute force to a narrow domain. The latter is true intelligence. I'm interested in the latter.

All humans suffer from confirmation bias. Emotion makes the bias greater. Confirmation bias is ripping the country apart. Please attenuate and don’t amplify. Please.

this crystallizes what’s wrong with AI today: we have no techniques whatsoever to transfer a general, if hard-won understanding of the world to new tasks. we instead do almost everything from scratch, because our representations of what is learned are too superficial.

If we refuse to engage with a radically different understanding of perception such as that offered by Ancient Greece & expect to find nothing alien in the Greeks, we will always perceive their understanding of color as primitive when it is in fact in many ways richer than ours.

    1. EMP is a real threat. It can happen via a nuclear EMP attack. Or naturally via a solar storm which makes it inevitable. Trump's national security strategy is the first to prioritize protecting Americans from an EMP. America First.

A pillar of Athenian democracy was sortition: selecting officials at random among a large pool of valid candidates. It can be very effective at preventing tribalism and corruption.
