2004: 14 year-old Adam Rickwood asked Serco officers what gave them the right to hit a child in the nose. They said it was restraint. Adam's nose bled for nearly an hour. He wrote a statement for his lawyer and a letter to his family, then hanged himself. Yesterday ⬇️

£5 million from £200 million Innovation Fund is going to local authorities for developing children's residential care capacity and commissioning practice. That's not going to pay for many children's homes.

Come on people, please sign this petition to give teenagers the same right to stay in their children's homes past the age of 18 as those in foster care have.

Wasn't 300,000 signatures Ian but you're completely right to raise the comparison. Doesn't make sense that many more thousands supported our campaign against the exemption clauses than for equal rights teenagers living in foster care and residential care. All strength to you.

Our rights4children* site has a wide range of children's rights information, covering topics which children and young people told us are important to them: *Named by a child in prison

We were told Charlie Taylor's review of pain-inducing restraint, completed in summer 2019 ⬇️, would be published this month. Not happened. 11 months ago said such restraint is child abuse which must be prohibited. All children equal, but some less equal than others.

Strongly agree with Ian. See para 6.5 of statutory guidance on complaints - "there should generally be a presumption in favour of freezing"

Well done. We are working with our friends at & & other non-governmental organisations to produce shared proposals on what the regulation should look like. Need to make sure government action is led by rights and interests of children and young people.

January nearly over, the month we were told the review of pain-inducing restraint wd be published. A year since the High Court stayed our app for judicial review pending the review's outcome. 15+ years since a child hanged himself after being inflicted with a 'nose distraction'.

NEW data out on children unable to breathe ('warning signs') during restraint, requiring medical treatment & being inflicted with pain. This & self-harm still categorised 'behaviour management'. Still no data on child protection referrals, enquiries & outcomes.

All kinds of interesting possible challenges: Human Rights Act (with UNCRC) - Articles 8 and 14. Similarly for children leaving children's homes & foster care, to live with birth or adoptive parents who can legally hit. Physical and psychological integrity protected, then not.

When Welsh law comes into force, children from Wales who are adopted in England will no longer have equal protection from assault. Will it be UK courts who right this wrong, or are there Parliamentarians who will champion this?

Brilliant! Children living in Wales now have the same protection from assault as adults. In England, children can still be legally hit in the home. In the year 2020.

Fantastic that Wales is set to follow Scotland in honouring children's fundamental human rights. England still shamefully holding onto legislation rooted in a case from 1860.
