I’ve now read it twice, and what leaps out for me is the absence of any acknowledgement that what is being contested here is, at least in part, the question of consent.https://twitter.com/douthatnyt/status/991739548269973504 …

When so many descriptions of an argument are unrecognizable to its author, that usually suggests the author failed in some important way. Still, I think hostile readers should consider re-reading the piece and I'll try to have some further thoughts a bit later.

Any discussion of “redistribution” of sex or a “right” to sex that doesn’t center issues of consent is going to raise huge red flags for a lot of people, and rightly so.

If you write a column about incels and Robin Hanson and don’t note that criticism of their attitudes toward sex are largely grounded in their attitudes about consent, people are going to freak out, and rightly so.

Incel culture is hostile to female sexual autonomy. Robin Hanson is coy to the point of filibuster when asked about it. You want to discuss them and their critics? Start there.

More generally, @DouthatNYT, if you believe that consent and sexual autonomy are essential and non-negotiable, say so, and distinguish those who agree with you from those who do not.

FWIW I hate Ross and thought a lot of the attacks against him today were in bad faith--or a knee jerk reaction to that horrible headline. In any case, I agree with everyone stating that Hanson is a creep. Ross? Just an overly virtuous weirdo who wishes virginity was cool again.

I should also note that I agree with everyone saying Ross is the very last person who should be writing about this kind of thing. Did not think the piece was lacking in context, though. Perhaps it left holes that led people to choose their own adventure, not sure.

Nah man Hanson's beliefs and Douthat's aren't that far apart at all They both agree that the incel "crisis" for instance is caused by women losing sexual value the less chaste they are

Hanson arguing that cuckoldry is worse than rape is weirdo Internet crap but it's also very very recognizably conservative

I read the original and follow up Hanson pieces on cuckolding. The follow up seemed to be him throwing gas on the fire rather than dousing it.

In the original post it seemed clear that he was not suggested the act of being raped was less bad than the act of being cheated on. The follow up really messed things up though.

He was trying to make some extremely creepy point about how it was the specific physical pain and injury associated with rape that was bad but the abstract concept of physical violation was "rationally" no big deal Hence his skin crawling hypothetical about "gentle silent rape"

Thinking about this stuff and consent culture has started me wondering whether "adultery" could make a comeback. Not as prohibition against cheating, but as a prohibition against having sex with someone you have not admitted to having cheated on.

I don’t think that can be inferred from this piece. He blames “Hefnerian” fantasies of male conquest (thus male created) and racism. He doesn’t even seem to imply it’s the fault of women. Again, I HATE ROSS. Just think the outrage over this one is overblown.

Sorry to imply anyone engaging with this story is outraged actually. Idk. I’m willing to accept that I’m wrong here. But on the issue of context and comprehension I thought everything was pretty clear and at no point did I think RD placed the blame for incels at the feet of women

But he implies it's an unfair environment that needs some redress for these 'systemically maligned' incels and places them as victims of a changing society - and that they are offering some legitimate insight which suggests ultimately they DO deserve (some form of) sex from women

I mean, Douthat famously wrote about how a woman murdered his boner by telling him she was on the pill. He really just hates the fact that women have any sexual agency at all.
