I’ve now read it twice, and what leaps out for me is the absence of any acknowledgement that what is being contested here is, at least in part, the question of consent.https://twitter.com/douthatnyt/status/991739548269973504 …

Hanson arguing that cuckoldry is worse than rape is weirdo Internet crap but it's also very very recognizably conservative
-
I read the original and follow up Hanson pieces on cuckolding. The follow up seemed to be him throwing gas on the fire rather than dousing it.
-
In the original post it seemed clear that he was not suggested the act of being raped was less bad than the act of being cheated on. The follow up really messed things up though.
-
He was trying to make some extremely creepy point about how it was the specific physical pain and injury associated with rape that was bad but the abstract concept of physical violation was "rationally" no big deal Hence his skin crawling hypothetical about "gentle silent rape"
-
Thinking about this stuff and consent culture has started me wondering whether "adultery" could make a comeback. Not as prohibition against cheating, but as a prohibition against having sex with someone you have not admitted to having cheated on.

I don’t think that can be inferred from this piece. He blames “Hefnerian” fantasies of male conquest (thus male created) and racism. He doesn’t even seem to imply it’s the fault of women. Again, I HATE ROSS. Just think the outrage over this one is overblown.
-
I’m not outraged.
-
Fair point! Sorry to imply that you were.
-
Sorry to imply anyone engaging with this story is outraged actually. Idk. I’m willing to accept that I’m wrong here. But on the issue of context and comprehension I thought everything was pretty clear and at no point did I think RD placed the blame for incels at the feet of women
-
But he implies it's an unfair environment that needs some redress for these 'systemically maligned' incels and places them as victims of a changing society - and that they are offering some legitimate insight which suggests ultimately they DO deserve (some form of) sex from women

I mean, Douthat famously wrote about how a woman murdered his boner by telling him she was on the pill. He really just hates the fact that women have any sexual agency at all.
