First rule if you're going to commit suicide for life insurance: don't leave a note saying so.

Yup, also almost all insurance policies have anti suicide clauses in them.

FYI the standard time limit for a suicide exclusion is two years after the policy start date. This is a matter of state law

If you've held the policy longer than two years, the policy pays out. There's nothing illegal about it

It's an NAIC model law that was adopted by the majority of states, which means insurance companies usually build it into their contracts

Thanks. Interesting. Still hard to believe a suicide would 1. want to mention it and 2. risk complicating claims filing for beneficiary.

Very interested facts, indeed. I'd also be curious to know if having a documented psychiatric history (or not) factors into their decisions.

Meaning do they see the suicide as "natural" if it's linked to a psychiatric illness but get wonky if it looks like financial shenanigans?

The NAIC model law specifically disallows exclusion of suicide as a covered cause of death after the two year term expires

It doesn't draw a distinction between types of suicide

Thanks again, that's good to know just for my own clinical knowledge. I'm glad they aren't discriminating against ppl on this issue.
