In general, the argument seems to rest on wishful thinking based on the idea that potions are a more "feminine" magic than hexes, etc.

Which leads us to the contradiction, which JKR did and makes deep character analysis of Snape & the whole Potterverse confusing

Philosopher's Stone Snape is a potion fan. He likes potions. He is all about potions and he pretty much thinks you suck if you don't potion

At some point, I believe in Prisoner of Azkaban, it's established that Snape *desperately* wants the Defense Against the Dark Arts job

This alone doesn't contradict that he is a potions enthusiast first and foremost - potions obviously should be vital for defending vs evil.

But in the Half-Blood Prince, JKR forgets that Snape was never about "careless wand-waving," and conspicuously has him invent hexes

Philosopher's Stone Snape's diary would have been much different, filled with ways to poison or gain great strength and euphoria

The majority of the Prince's book is still Potions lore. I don't think it contradicts anything for Snape to be a genius overall

He has contempt for the other classes because he's earned it -- he legitimately is skilled at spells but finds potions more interesting

My headcanon of Snape is he's a contrarian and takes interest in whatever other people find unpopular

But he also has a chip on his shoulder about ever being caught vulnerable, hence becoming a master duelist and occlumens
