Sure, one of my favorite bits of worldbuilding is how only the Killing Curse is Unforgivable and burning/slashing/maiming is not

I think that's got something to do with the wizarding world's view on meritocracy. The Killing Curse can only be situationally countered...

Given what you can do to a wizard with other spells, you can easily remove them as a threat or a rival. The Killing Curse is just murder.

You're right though Snape inventing an "open up bleeding wounds that instantly reopen if you try to close them" spell was toeing the line
