I'm probably the opposite of the target audience bc I have no attachment to the source material but I don't see why the complainers are mad

I mean yes it's "gritty" but it's about as gritty as a portrayal of the life of an orphan ought to be

many fans are loyal to the much gauzier 1980's TV adaptation

To be fair, that version is pretty true to the source material. Anne is a fundamentally romantic character.

Mostly bc in early 1900s, LMM would never have been able to get it published if she'd described what life in orphanage was really like

Like Dickens? George Eliot? The Jungle? She wasn't writing an exposé/social realism. There's a reason the books start after the orphanage.

My girls (9 and 6) were in tears after the first 15 minutes and stopped. Lots of time discussing it afterwards. Never saw the original.

Please do try the 1980's version if they're willing to give it a go!

I'd be cool with trying the current one w/o my girls and the older one maybe with them.

Yeah the new series is definitely PG-13

They even aged up Anne to 13 from 11 for that reason

Right. I didn't do my due diligence with this one but it did open the conversation with my girls about abuse.
