Tbf in the Sherlock stories this isn't that common, the most memorable examples are legit "I did it to stop the REAL villain let me explain"

Or else it's gloating villain monologuing. The "It's a fair cop" thing is a post-Victorian thing that creeps into adaptations

What's more common and more jarring is Sherlock explaining the villain's backstory to the villain but that fits his insufferable character
