“Magic makes sense” is a trope. “Magic doesn’t make sense” is a trope.

“Dark Is Evil” and “Dark Is Not Evil” are named tropes on TVT and I don’t think I can make my point more conclusively than they do for me.

FTR a lot of people criticize TV Tropes for this reason, it broadens the definition of the word "trope" to meaninglessness

"Chairs exist and people use them for sitting" could be a "trope" by their standards

I haven’t seen clear lines for where the concept of “A replicable pattern can be named” should stop if stopped earlier/smaller, elsewhere

Well keep in mind the original meaning of "trope" was actually specific repeated phrases in a genre that you could use to identify it

Like, an actual synonym of "trope" would be "cliche"; TV Tropes became what it is bc of their "Tropes Are Not Cliches" decision

So an actual trope is the villain literally confronting the hero saying "We're not so different, you and I"

TV Tropes broadens the definition of "trope" w the general "Not So Different Speech", which is ok, sure

But then you get "Not So Different" itself not being a trope, as in the trope exists whenever the hero and villain are similar

And then it's not a trope at all, it's just, like, a description of a fact about the story

TV Tropes itself ran into the issue of having to segregate huge lists of tropes bc they can't even be justified as authorial decisions

So the "Actor was in a similar movie once before" tropes go under Trivia
