Like, impeachment, for instance, would not work if political parties existed and Congress was the same party as the president

The Constitution was based on the concept that parties were bad, that politicians would serve as individuals on their own merits, etc

It totally failed to pan out that way, and there were clear political parties by the 2nd ever presidential election

(Which is why they had to change the rule abt the VP, bc with parties, the runner-up in the election will always be from the opposing party)

And yet we kept the Constitution pretty much the same and left all those systems in place, and are now watching them fail to work

The Electoral College didn't filter out Trump bc the electors were all picked to be loyal Republicans

Impeachment won't happen bc Republicans don't impeach Republicans, the 25th won't be invoked bc Republicans don't label Republicans unfit

Idk a clean solution for this other than chucking the system and replacing it w a parliamentary system that's based on the idea of parties

I mean ppl keep hoping that principled Republicans will take a stand but it ain't happening bc that's not how parties work

The whole point of a party is that you don't get to that level of power within a party unless you've passed a bunch of loyalty tests

(And the way it's shaken out it's the Democrats who've been worse at doing that, hence the only defector electors in 2016 being Democrats)

American system should never have worked. And 60 years after Jefferson elected and factions hardened, it failed.
