Yeah, this stuff becomes complicated w stories like this - Rabe was in a position to do what he did bc he was a Nazi @RoonMian
I’m willing to grant these guys an exemption from the punch-a-Nazi rule.
that's what makes it complex though - Schindler wasn't a "real" Nazi though, before the war, also not known as a great guy
he genuinely hoped to make a quick buck running Nazi slave labor factories, wasn't ideologically antisemitic
and actually realizing his decision to take or reject workers was life-or-death seems to have fundamentally changed him
Rabe really was a Nazi, he idolized Hitler
but like with Schindler when they came for Chinese ppl he personally knew and worked with he couldn't stomach it
it's funny bc even with his overwhelming disgust at Nanjing he never spoke up about German atrocities
after the war he must've heard about the Holocaust but there's no evidence he cared or changed his mind
well look at Sugihara - a genuinely good dude, he lost a really good job in China bc he quit in disgust
he hated the Imperial Japanese Army and their use of slave labor
but that wasn't enough to make him actually quit the government, or turn against Japan
