Well more specifically we pay payroll tax twice - we pay the "employer" half and the "employee" halfhttps://twitter.com/realsesmith/status/819696480340492288 …

Did you know that freelancers and ICs pay tax twice? Income tax AND self-employment tax. And no employer benefits. https://twitter.com/catvalente/status/819693940626624513 …

When you're self-employed you wear both the "employer" and "employee" hat, with interesting/complicated legal consequences

It's one reason it's helpful just for accounting to have an LLC that "pays you your salary"

(Fun fact, some people think an LLC limits your liability if you get sued. If you are the LLC's only employee, it does no such thing at all)

Anyway I'm not ready to jump on "self employed status = oppression" bc some very wealthy ppl abuse it very lucratively

everything you said is wrong. LLC can provide limited liability for a solo if properly done, and LLC itself does nothing. /1

I researched this heavily when I started an LLC, didn't see any way to limit tort liability that applied to me

you have to elect S-Corp status too. Don't give out legal advice, the rest rocks, signed someone who does it for a living /2

This also varies by state & profession. Some profsns are specifically prohibited from structuring to limit personal liability
