      they kind of contradict each other, too - Matthew says Jesus is from Bethlehem, and they move to Nazareth bc of Herod

      Luke says Joseph and Mary were already in Nazareth, and go to Bethlehem where Jesus is born bc of the census

      they're 100 miles apart, Nazareth was "northern Judea" and Bethlehem "southern"

      the context is that Nazareth was a "nothing special" place while Bethlehem was prophesied to be the Messiah's birthplace

          so the story had to tell us how Jesus was born in Bethlehem but ended up being known as being from Nazareth

          In the Gospels they even mention that when people hear Jesus is a prophet they say "Can anything good come from Nazareth?"
