they kind of contradict each other, too - Matthew says Jesus is from Bethlehem, and they move to Nazareth bc of Herod

Luke says Joseph and Mary were already in Nazareth, and go to Bethlehem where Jesus is born bc of the census

but that's a later interpretation, neither original story actually says that's what happened
