Can't help but wonder how much of this is tied to the religious belief that Earth was created for us to enjoy
Like the idea of colonizing other planets being a snap bc human expansion is our "destiny"
Here's the thing abt colonizing Mars: for most of Earth's past, Earth was an "alien" planet we couldn't have survived in
We're pretty likely to discover soon just how hard life is on a mildly "alien" Earth, never mind a completely alien world
I liked Douglas Adams' metaphor. Imagine a talking thinking puddle of water. "Hey, this hole in the ground is shaped JUST LIKE ME!"
"The ground must have been MADE for me! I am precious and special!" As the sun comes out "This is temporary, a test of my will to survive"
As the puddle is more than half dried out "I don't understand! I have existed here as long as I can remember! I am part of the universe"
I like The Matrix as a metaphor at a very practical level too - we've already made it impossible to survive w the "old ways" but hidden it
Our media, our advertising, we try to pretend this imaginary world of cute little farms and traditional artisans exists
The reality is we cannot survive anymore without a massive infrastructure of intensive industrial agriculture
The Earth was starving to death and the "miracle" of the Green Revolution was to keep us going with a concentrated IV of synthetic chemicals
The next shot in the arm will be mass adoption of GMOs to survive the next big climate shift
